Dr. Abdi Farah Shirdon, affectionately known as Saacid, was born in 1958 in Dhusamareb, located in the Galgaduud region of Somalia. From an early age, Shirdon demonstrated exceptional academic abilities and a deep commitment to understanding the economic forces that shape nations.
He pursued higher education at the prestigious Somali National University (then known as Gaheyr), graduating in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in Economics. His academic excellence laid the foundation for a career dedicated to public service and economic development.
Following graduation, Shirdon entered government service, where he worked as an economist from 1983 to 1985. During this period, he served in key positions at:
These formative years gave him firsthand experience in governance and economic planning, skills that would prove invaluable in his later political career.
In 1985, Shirdon transitioned from public service to private enterprise, embarking on a successful business career. Before the collapse of the central government in 1991, he founded and led Shirdon International Ltd., establishing himself as a respected entrepreneur.
Following the outbreak of civil war, Shirdon relocated to Nairobi, Kenya, where he continued his business ventures, including an import-export firm. For decades, he remained a successful businessman while maintaining strong connections to Somali affairs from abroad.
His business acumen and international experience provided him with a unique perspective on economic development and international relations — expertise he would later bring to the highest levels of government.
As Somalia began its slow path toward recovery in the 2010s, Shirdon answered the call to return to public service. In March 2012, he was elected as the first chairman of Rajo Forum — a political and peace-oriented organization bringing together intellectuals, professionals, businessmen, and politicians to advocate for national reconciliation.
The Rajo Forum represented Shirdon's commitment to building bridges across clan and political divides, emphasizing dialogue and cooperation as the path to a peaceful Somalia.
On 6 October 2012, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud appointed Dr. Abdi Farah Shirdon as Prime Minister of Somalia. His nomination received overwhelming support in the Federal Parliament, with 215 out of 275 votes approving his appointment on October 17, 2012.
Formed a streamlined cabinet of just 10 ministers, promoting efficiency and accountability.
Appointed Fowsiyo Yusuf Haji Adan as Foreign Minister — the first female to hold this position in Somalia's history.
Strengthened diplomatic ties and secured international support for Somalia's reconstruction.
Worked to improve security coordination and support military operations against extremists.
His premiership ended in December 2013 following a no-confidence vote (184 out of 249 MPs) amid a political dispute over cabinet appointments. Notably, he was reportedly not given the opportunity to defend himself before the vote — a testament to the challenging political environment of post-conflict Somalia.
After his term as Prime Minister, Shirdon remained actively engaged in Somali politics. He has continued to advocate for national reconciliation, good governance, and economic development.
As of 2025, Dr. Abdi Farah Shirdon is running for President of Somalia, leading the Haybad Qaran Union. His campaign focuses on:
